The Terracotta Army or the Terracotta Warriors and Horses is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. This form of funerary art was buried with the emperor in 210-209 BCE to protect him in his afterlife. The figures, dating from around the late third century BCE, were discovered by local farmers in Lintong District, Xi'an, Shaanxi province, in 1974. The tallest figures are generals, while warriors, chariots and horses make up the majority of the sculptures. Estimates suggest that over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses were buried in the pits near Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. Other terracotta non-military figures include officials, acrobats, strongmen and musicians found in separate pits. Read more about the Terracotta Army on Wikipedia.
