I recently purchased a 2016 Creator Pro by Flashforge and was eager to print some upgrades, but I soon discovered that the new printer already features many of them. The left extruder now has a baffle to blow air when printing PLA, the door opens laterally, the filament is secured, and the handles are covered. Printing ABS is fine for normal prints, but when I tried to print tall objects in less-than-ideal room temperature conditions, I experienced some splits. As someone who brews their own beer, I know that temperature control makes all the difference. I decided to use my 3D printer to build a device to fit an old hair dryer and control it using a spare STC1000 I had. On the right side of the printer, I fitted two boxes as shown in the pictures. The hair dryer was a small 220V model that I completely disassembled, keeping only the bare essentials. Unless you're confident with your electronics, I advise against taking apart the hair dryer yourself, as it can be challenging to figure out how all the wires are connected. I had to spend some time figuring out the correct connections. The holes in the Hair Dryer box are specific to my model, but I'm sure you'll be able to adapt them to your own models. I've included Sketchup files for reference. Keep in mind that a Sketchup export may have inverted triangles and non-manifold issues, which I corrected using Netfabb. The system works well, but it's incredibly loud. The printer is located in a spare room next to our bedroom, so we can't hear it at night. However, if you plan to work near the printer, you might find it too noisy. I'll be uploading a comparison of the same object printed in ABS with and without active heating soon. For now, I keep the system at 55C, and I've glued the temperature probe of the STC to a patch of neoprene, adhesive velcro, and stuck it to the Z carriage at the back. This allows me to read the temperature at bed level. Let me know how it goes for you, and happy ABS printing!
