Wario is the main antagonist of Nintendo's Mario series, designed to rival Mario in every way. He first burst onto the scene in 1992's Game Boy title Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as the primary villain and final boss. Originally, Wario was created by exaggerating Mario's traits, with his name being a combination of Mario's name and the Japanese word warui, which means "bad". Hiroji Kiyotake brought Wario to life, while Charles Martinet lends his voice to this infamous character, who also voices many other characters in the series. Since making his debut, Wario has become the hero and antihero of the Wario Land and WarioWare series, spanning both handheld and console markets. In addition to appearances in spin-offs within the Mario series, he makes cameo appearances in Kirby Super Star Ultra, Densetsu no Stafy 3, and Pilotwings 64. He has also been featured in other media such as the Super Mario Adventures graphic novel. Critics have given Wario a largely positive review, cementing his status as Nintendo's well-established mascot.
