A wardrobe is a standing closet where you store clothes, originally a chest, with the name emerging when luxury reached royal palaces and powerful nobles' castles. Before that, apparel was kept in a separate area provided by these regal residences. The word 'wardrobe' describes a room filled with closets, lockers, and drawers. Over time, the modern wardrobe evolved from cupboards and lockers, now featuring hanging spaces, sliding shelves, and multiple drawers. From its beginning as a place to keep a king's robe, the wardobe gained various meanings as an independent store for treasured items like gold during King Edward I's reign. A wardrobe is also a simple closet where clothes are hung from metal bars or placed in utility racks that stretch up and down. Modern and historical wardrobes differ primarily due to triple partitioning: two linear compartments with shelves on each side, along with middle hanging pegs, drawers, and a press above chest level. An armoire is typically wider than an adult's span while a wardrobe is smaller. The word 'wardrobe' entered the English language in the early 14th century, originating from Old French words meaning 'to keep' or 'guard' garments. In the United States, oak hanging cupboards appeared as early as the 17th century and became export items due to England's deforestation for the Navy. They were also known as oakleys, and large ones featured carved fronts produced over a hundred years before being gradually replaced by American walnut for furniture making due to available materials. However, walnut wardrobes were not common; clothes presses with drawers were more frequent. For several centuries during the 18th century, tallboys served as storage units. Sizing was sometimes based on a formula involving small men, although this method had various interpretations and applications throughout its use. The kas, kast or kasten cupboard, an armoire from Dutch origins, dominated in America during those periods. Made of fine woods, often paneled or carved with lockable doors by key, it became status symbols in many families who also considered these valuable heirlooms as a form of investment in their cultural legacies.
