This monument was created by Belgian architect Geo Vindevogel between 1923-1977 from a variety of recycled materials, its purpose is to serve as a memorial to commemorate the people of Ghent who fell in both world wars. It is not given a name so that no one will be forgotten. On June 3rd 1956, the monument was unveiled to the city. On the base of the monument, large bronze letters circle the circumference reading "THE CITY OF GHENT HONOURS ITS DEAD, 1914-1918, 1940-1945". The main part of the monument is in the shape of a large bronze sword, its tip cutting into the stone base. Around the hilt is a laurel wreath, with laurel leaves on one side and oak leaves on the other. Along the sword are signed 'VINDEVOGEL'.
