War Gaming Paint Racks

I have designed myself some shelves for the paints I use with my Warhammer 40K and other model painting.

The system is designed so you can put a shelf on both sides of a wall and chain them together. For instance, you can do a 2-step wall, shelves, 2-step wall, shelves, and a 2-step wall. You will want to use some sort of super glue (or appropriate glue for your filament of choice) to hold it all together.

Step Wall Options

2 Step

3 Step

4 Step

2 Step - Vallejo/similar Bottle Height

Wall-Mounting Wall Options

1 Shelf Wall

2 Shelf Wall

3 Shelf Wall

4 Shelf Wall

Shelf Options & Common Paint Bottles

6-bottle 26mm diameter - Vallejo

6-bottle 26mm diameter, tall back - Vallejo

5-bottle 34mm diameter - GW / Citadel

5-bottle 34mm diameter, tall back - GW / Citadel

4-bottle 36mm diameter - Tamiya & Vellejo Acrylic Metal Color

5-bottle 34mm square - Revell Aqua

Variable Height Brush/Tool Rack (use "shelf-brush-*" files)

2-Step Deep Box (takes up two steps, file called "shelf-box.stl")

1-Step Flat Shelf

2-Step Deep Flat Shelf (takes up two steps, file called "shelf-deep-flat.stl")

Four rounded inside corner storage shelves (takes up three steps)

One squared inside corner storage shelf (takes up three steps)

The 6-bottle 26mm diameter shelves fit the 17 ml Vallejo paint dropper bottles and similarly sized dropper bottles. The tall-back version is mostly helpful for the wall-mounting walls.

The 5-bottle 34mm diameter shelves fit all the Citadel (Games Workshop) paint bottles. This includes the Shade, Texture, and Contrast bottles as they are all the same diameter. Again, the tall-back version is mostly helpful for the wall-mounting walls.

The 4-bottle 36mm diameter shelves fit the 10 ml Tamiya acrylic paint bottles and the 32 ml Vallejo Acrylic Metal airbrush paint bottles

The 5-bottle 34mm square shelves fit the Revell Aqua paint bottles.

The wall-mounting walls can be flipped to have the screw hole on either side. They have the bottles angled at 45 degrees and is only meant for the paint bottle shelves (not the brushes, tools, or other shelves).

Variable Height Brush/Tool Rack
This holds up to 16 paint brushes, one hobby knife handle, and pliers/cutters.

You will need to print the bottom and top parts. The number of middle parts printed will determine shelf height of the rack. My suggestion is just print 1 of each (top, middle, bottom), resulting in a 3 shelf height rack. The tall bottom brush shelf is to replace a middle & bottom brush shelf, giving you deeper slots for the paint brush handles to sit in.

Corner Storage Shelves
These provide a way to have corner storage between sets of straight shelves. You should also put at least one 'Corner Foot' in the back edge of the corner storage shelves to increase the strength of it. These are simple 5 mm tall by 10 mm wide cylinders.

These require some basic supports for the wall insert pieces.

Updates
10/23/20 update 2: Realized the 4-bottle shelf I added earlier today also fits Tamiya paint bottles. Happy coincidence. I modified some of the wording on here to reflect the dimensions of each bottle shelf.

10/23/20: Added 1 4-bottle shelf for Vallejo's Acrylic Metal Color Airbrush paints. Added 3-shelf and 4-shelf wall-mounted walls.

10/20/20: Added a 5 GW bottle shelf with taller back. Added the 1-shelf and 2-shelf wall-mounted walls. Will look to add more wall-mounted walls later.

8/10/20: Added 5 different Corner Storage shelves. These require at least a 3-step wall. 4 of them are rounded and the 5th is squared off in the back corner. These should all have the Corner Foot with them too to increase strength.

6/1/20: Added a 5-bottle/box shelf for Revell Aqua paints. I don't have any myself and the tolerances are .5 mm from what was shared with me on their size but I'm told they fit great.

5/12/20: The paint brush shelves now have a guide built into them to fit together. The overhang in the bottom of the mid and top pieces are only 1.6mm wide so nearly and printer's bridging should work. You should not use supports for these.

Print instructions

BASIC SETTINGS
Layer Height: 0.2
Infill: 15%

SUPPORTS & ORIENTATION
The only items that needs supports is the box shelf and the corner shelves as the wall inserts sit up a bit on the sides. The bottom and middle brush/tool rack parts might need support for the big circles on the sides but most printers should be able to handle that overhang without support, or minimal support.

All other pieces can be printed without support.

When printing the walls, print them on their side.
