Wanhao LED Strip Lighting
thingiverse
I wanted to illuminate the Print Bed so I could see and/or video what was being printed, so I decided to use a strip of high-brightness LED's. These are cheap, easily obtained and consume very little power - a 5 Volt LED Strip uses approximately 10 Watts per Meter. Mounting the LED Strip was going to be the challenge in more ways than one. Firstly, because of the high-brightness of the LED's, I didn't want the LED's facing directly out towards me or even side-on. I needed to point them backwards somewhat without losing too much illumination of the Print Bed. Secondly, I didn't want to Glue or Drill the LED Strip onto the Printer, so I did the obvious thing and 3D printed some LED Clips. The LED Clips, when in place, actually face the LED Strip more towards the back of the Printer, therefore avoiding blinding me with their light. This doesn't seem to detract from the amount of illumination being provided to the Print Bed as there is certainly enough light for videoing. The LED Strip is attached to the Clips by Cable Ties and the Clips are simply slid onto the Printer Frame. It might be a bit fiddly to attach the Clips when you first start, but they hold perfectly and don't damage any part of the Printer. I hope others might find this project useful if they're thinking of doing the same. By the way, the "Left" and "Right" Clips are simply to maintain the same orientation of the Clips on both sides of the Printer Frame - you can print multiples of the same Clip if you like and just turn them around as needed.
