Wanhao Duplicator I3 Filament Spool Holder
thingiverse
This is a replacement filament spool holder for the Wanhao Duplicator I3 (and its derivatives like the Monoprice 113860). If the provided spool holder is too narrow for your media, this might be a solution. This design is a remix of http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1652770 by Abu Rashid. Both the original inspiration and this design are licensed under CC-Attribution. Print Settings Printer: Monoprice 113860 (Wanhao Duplicator I3 clone) Rafts: Yes Supports: No Resolution: Normal (0.1mm layers) Infill: Dense (35%) Notes: The threads are the most critical part in terms of finish and dimensions. Print them at the top. (If you put them at the bottom, they'll get messy.) This part has to bear ~1.5kg weight under vibration, and unfortunately the weaker (Z) axis is the longest. Make it strong. That means thick walls, a hot extruder, and a good infill pattern. I'd strongly suggest ABS (or other tough material) over PLA. As with any tall skinny part, adhesion to the base is important, so I'd suggest using a raft. The part is designed to avoid the need for any supports if printed with the threads at the top. Post-Printing The part should be ready to use right off the bed. You can do a light sanding if you feel like it for aesthetic reasons. I'd suggest avoiding tumbling for the sake of the threads. (If you do so, use gentle media and a short time.) How I Designed This Designed in OpenSCAD. (This is my first parametric CAD project!) Comments, criticism, and suggestions are welcome. Note that the threads library is the usual threads.scad. I have given it a funny name (threads.scadlib) in an attempt to get the Makerbot Customizer (which only allows a single .scad file) to work. It still doesn't load the thread library, though, so I have disabled it lest it trick someone into printing a useless part. If you need to change the defaults, please download OpenSCAD and modify locally. Customization Parameters Spool Width The width in mm of the flat part of the spool holder where the spool rests. Set this to the width of your media spool plus clearance. 68mm is a good fit for the "Inland" brand filament spools sold at Microcenter. This is likely the only parameter you will need to adjust. Spool Radius Radius in mm of the flat part where the spool rests. The default of 15mm should be fine for most uses. Lip Radius The extra radius (beyond the Spool Radius) in mm of the raised portion at either end of the spool arm. (The one on the non-thread end is what keeps the spool from falling off.) The default of 5mm should work in most cases. Lip Width The length in mm of the raised portion on either end of the spool arm. The default of 5mm should be fine. Flare Width The length in mm of the tapered transition between the main spool arm body and the lip. The default of 3mm should be OK for most. This value is largely an aesthetic choice, but beware of making it too small as doing so can create an overhang near the threaded end that would require supports to print cleanly. Thread Width Length in mm of the threaded portion. This must be at least the thickness of the bracket used to mount the arm plus the thickness of the M30x1.5 nut plus clearance. The default of 10mm should be a reasonable choice. Hollow Fraction The design includes a conical hollow (with the wide base of the cone at the thread end). This is intended to stiffen the structure. This is a unitless parameter that controls the size of the hollow in proportion to the part as a whole. Larger values lead to a bigger hollow (and thinner walls). The default of 0.80 looks reasonable, but I have not tested to see what value produces the sturdiest part. See Also This spool holder works with the nut from the OEM spool holder, but if you want to print your own nut, I have designed a compatible one: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1752310
