Who is portrayed? Neptune was the god of fresh water and sea in Roman faith. He is Poseidon's counterpart from Greek mythology. In Greek-influenced tradition, Neptune was Jupiter and Pluto's brother; they ruled Heaven, earth, and Underworld realms. Salacia was his wife. Roman mosaics depicting Neptune, especially those found in North Africa, were influenced by Hellenistic conventions. Before the sea, Neptune was probably linked to fresh water springs. Like Poseidon, Romans worshipped Neptune as a horse god, known as Neptunus Equester, patron of horse racing. -- More about the creator Gabriël Grupello (also Gabriël de Grupello or Gabriël Reppeli; 22 May 1644 – 20 June 1730) was a Flemish Baroque sculptor who created religious and mythological sculptures, portraits, and public art. He was an accomplished sculptor with several European rulers as patrons.
