Federal Hall, constructed in the year 1700 as New York's City Hall, later served as the initial capitol building of the United States under the Constitution. It was the site where George Washington took office as the first President of the United States. The United States Bill of Rights was introduced there by the First Congress. Federal Hall was demolished in 1812. A new structure, Federal Hall National Memorial on Wall Street, was built in 1842 as a New York Customs House, replacing the old building on the same site. It later served as a sub-Treasury building and is now operated by the National Park Service as a museum commemorating its historic events.
