The Wales national rugby union team, known as Tîm rygbi'r undeb cenedlaethol Cymru in Welsh, competes every year in the Six Nations Championship against England, France, Ireland, Italy and Scotland. They have won the championship 27 times without sharing it with anyone else. Their most recent victory came in 2019 when they also achieved a Grand Slam. The governing body behind Wales' rugby team is the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), which was founded in 1881. That's the same year Wales played their first international match against England. As the years went by, Wales kept improving their performance in the Home Nations Championship, enjoying their first 'golden age' from 1900 to 1911. In 1905, they faced New Zealand for the very first time and managed to beat them 3-0 at Cardiff Arms Park. Wales struggled with rugby between the two World Wars but then experienced a second 'golden age' that lasted from 1969 to 1980 during which they won eight Five Nations Championships. They made their debut in the Rugby World Cup in 1987 and reached third place, which was their best performance ever. When professionalism was introduced in 1995, Wales hosted the 1999 World Cup and in 2005, they secured their first Six Nations Grand Slam while playing most of their matches away from home. Wales won three more Grand Slams in 2008, 2012 and 2019. In 2011, they came fourth in the Rugby World Cup. Their home ground is the Principality Stadium, which replaced the old National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park in 1999. Eight former Welsh players have been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame and ten were previously inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame before it merged with the World Rugby Hall in 2014.
