Originally developed as The Elysian, the groundbreaking project was approved in June 2005. Construction began in 2006 and continued until 2009, yielding a majestic 60-story hotel designed by Chicago's renowned architect Lucien Lagrange. David Pisor spearheaded the development of this spectacular project, which comprises two main components: a luxurious 188-room hotel and 51 sumptuous condominiums above (valued at an estimated $280 million combined). In 2009, the condominiums were appraised between $2.5 and $8.5 million. The hotel officially opened its doors in February 2009, boasting an entrance that pays homage to the Gold Coast neighborhood's rich tradition - a charming cobblestone courtyard that echoes the grand hotels of Paris in the 1920s, complete with colonnades, spires, and a motor court. This five-star hotel was crowned Conde Nast Traveler's top hotel in the United States in 2011. Nevertheless, it faced financial struggles, failing to turn a profit within its first two years. In September 2011, Jones Lang LaSalle announced plans to sell the property after Pisor's equity partner chose to exit the hotel business rather than expand The Elysian into a hotel brand as initially envisioned.
