Human: Summary Understandings: Students will understand what wagashi, Japanese sweets, is and its history and types of wagashi. They will also learn about seasonal words in Japanese, what haiku is, how to write haiku, and the process to print wagashi using Makerware. Essential Questions: What is wagashi? What do wagashi look like? What is special about wagashi? What is haiku? What is haiga? How can I write haiku? What is Makerware used for? Knowledge: Students will know what haiku, kigo, and haiga are. They will also understand the steps to follow when writing haiku and what wagashi is, what they look like, and their unique features. Skills: Students will be able to identify seasonal words/phrases in Japanese, write haiku in English, use Makerware software to scale and position wagashi models, and create a 3D display of wagashi and their original haiku in English. Stage 2: Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: Create a 3D haiga by displaying wagashi and their original haiku in English. Save the Print Screen image of Makerware layout. Other Evidence includes worksheets, planning sheets for the design, and a Wagashi fridge magnet. Stage 3: Learning Plan Learning Activities: Lesson 1: What's wagashi? Show PowerPoint to learn about types of wagashi and when Japanese people eat it. Students will identify seasonal words in Japanese. Make a list of seasonal words. Show PowerPoint of some wagashi and students will identify for which season each wagashi is. Lesson 2: What's haiku? Show PowerPoint to learn what haiku is. Learn seven keys to write haiku. Fill in a worksheet to write haiku. Learn about kigo, seasonal words, and saijiki, a list of seasonal words. Learn about haiga, a style of Japanese painting that incorporates the aesthetics of haikai. Lesson 3: What is Makerware software? Demonstrate the process to load model, scale, and move 3D models in Makerware software. Performance Tasks include selecting wagashi model, opening it in makerware software, manipulating 3D models, exporting to file, and printing out model to make a fridge magnet. How I Designed This Students will learn about Haiku and wagashi by creating their own Haiku display using Makerbot Makerware software. Collaborating with the Japanese teacher, students can create their own Haiku display using Makerbot Makerware software. Students will learn to use makerware software by moving, scaling, rotating, changing position, and then using preview to see how the part will be printed.
