UPDATE I upgraded this model to a fully functional 3-d-puzzle that kids love. It struck me, however, that I had created several simplified plane models by now, but none of them were biplanes. The construction needed to be a bit more intricate, but the end result was well worth it. My build was done on a high-precision desktop CNC machine from Stepcraft using 6.5 mm thick beech plywood and a spiral-toothed 1.2 mm flute. After gluing the pieces together and giving them a nice sanding, I ended up with an awesome toy that's perfect for boys of all ages. A laser cutter could also be used to create smaller versions of this design. For more simplified plane designs, check out https://www.zenziwerken.de/en/Toys/Plane-Models. Keep in mind that the STL file is only meant for validating the construction and viewing in a browser. Here's How I Designed It I searched online for 3-view drawings of this plane to create accurate outlines. I then used Illustrator to trace the images and carve out the main features. The slots were a result of trial and error. Before building the plane, I did a 3D validation in SketchUp to ensure everything fit together properly. Then, I nested the parts as close as possible for production on a CNC router.
