I conceived the idea of crafting a 3D puzzle with interlocking parts secured by rubber rings I've seen used on display stands at my local supermarket. Utilizing this biplane design I published previously, I began searching for optimal solutions for each component. The ideal outcome would be that each piece locks onto another, but this was clearly not feasible. After multiple iterations and adjustments to the original design, I developed a working prototype. I created two versions of the puzzle using my desktop CNC machine by Stepcraft. One was cut from 6.5 mm beech plywood with a spiral-toothed 1.2 mm flute, while the larger one was crafted from 9 mm birch plywood. The rubber rings were sourced from eBay. The smaller rings measure 5x2mm and 6x2mm, respectively, whereas the larger ones are 10x2.4mm and 15x2.4mm. For more simplified plane designs, visit zenziwerken.de/en/Toys/Plane-Models. Keep in mind that the STL file is intended for validation of the construction and viewing in a browser. You can find a Premium Edition containing adapted files for 9 mm material width, as well as AI files and printable assembly instructions at zenziwerken.de/etsy/602009671/3-d-puzzle-doppeldecker-bauplan.
