Wa-ririk Single Outrigger Boat No.: NMM/EM/154/A Place of Acquisition: Kiribati, Gilbert Islands, Oceanic Island (Banaba) Dimensions: Length 6.25 Meters, Height 0.58 Meters Origin: Donated by Mrs Valerie Fenwick, Blaxhall, Suffolk, the United Kingdom Description: The 6 Square Kilometer Coral Banaba Island Sits on the Pacific Ocean with 280 Inhabitants. A boat called wa-ririk allowed them to navigate among islands effortlessly. The hull has a narrow keel, side planks have no waterproofing and are sewn together with cords according to an ancient method. It is also asymmetric – more bulgy from the outrigger side to compensate its resistance. Thanks to that, the boat stays on course without a steering oar. Because of its speed, it gained the name “flying proa.” This Boat Built in the 1960s Was Named Te Itel (Frigate Bird as Seen on the Kiribati Flag). Its Shallow Draft Allows It to Glide Over Coral Reefs Smoothly. A Single Outrigger is Always Placed on the Windward Side.
