Initially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA), it was marketed as the Volkswagen 1500, later becoming known as the Volkswagen 1600. The Type 3 is available in three body styles: a two-door Notchback, a Fastback, and a Variant, which was referred to as the 'Squareback' in the United States. The introduction of the Type 3 expanded Volkswagen's product lineup beyond its existing models – the Type 1 Beetle, Type 14 Karmann Ghia, and Type 2 (Bus) – while retaining key engineering features like the air-cooled rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout and all-round torsion bar suspension on a 2,400 mm wheelbase. The design of the Type 3 was focused on providing more space for passengers and luggage, as well as a larger engine, positioning it as a family car rather than the Beetle.
