I replace the backlight lamp in my heater control unit. The unit is one piece, produced by VW. If only the lamp fails, I have to replace the whole thing, which is expensive and no longer made. To fix this, I swap out the bulb for a white LED. The LED comes with a built-in resistor for 12-volt use, available on Ebay or DX. To install it, I cut the lamp holder from the heater control unit. Then, I widen the lamp hole to fit the LED. If I don't want to cut the loom, I can solder the LED wires to the pins instead. Next, I put all the parts together. Note: No glue is needed; the part fits snugly into place. I added a second LED on the right side for better results. With just one bulb, only half the heater control lit up. Adding an LED on both sides fixed this issue. To get the best result, I grind away some of the white plastic so the LEDs shine through easily. Again, no glue is required; the part simply pushes between the plastic parts in the heater control.
