VTOL: Chimera & Volcano blower fan-duct
thingiverse
When you need ducts for the Volcano or Chimera, there are plenty available, but when you want a duct for both, good luck is hard to find. Let's be honest, regular fans or axial fans just aren't powerful enough, and volcanos run fast and hot. That's why I highly recommend blower fans - they deliver more power! They're so much better. VTOL stands for vertical takeoff and landing, a feature used in aircraft like the Harrier fighter plane or helicopters that can take off without a runway. Wait, what? Just look at it and see how cool it is. Running blowers at lower RPM is nice and quiet, but you get far better performance. It's overkill, mainly because blowers are noisy. The size of small blower fans is mostly universal, so they just clamp on. Scaling up or down by 1-2% might help a bit. The red part is a heavily modified version of a part made by LV - I'm not sure what the exact model is, but Glory to him! The VTOL simply screws into the 40mm regular fan that cools the Chimera heat sink. It's surprisingly lightweight despite its size. You can use all four blowers or leave the second row off completely. The nozzles are aimed towards the part, not the printer nozzle, and have some distance to it. This setup delivers great bridging performance. I highly recommend using an E3D silicone sock for the heat block or upping the fan speeds by 10% per layer - this will prevent the block from cooling too much and killing the print on low-heat warnings. You can mix and match the parts as needed, use both vertical and horizontal mounts, or two of one type depending on your setup or needs. Some modification might be necessary. The side support beams can be turned upside down to raise or lower the second row of blowers. I printed mine in 0.3 layers with no supports - excuse the ugly quality! Made simply because I needed one, while it's ugly and plain huge, it sure does work. Use it and abuse it!
