History The VS-300 was a helicopter designed by Igor Sikorsky that made its maiden flight on September 14, 1939. It featured a single three-blade rotor powered by a robust 75 horsepower (56 kW) engine. On May 13, 1940, the VS-300 achieved its first untethered flight. Although it wasn't the very first successful helicopter to fly, it marked the beginning of a configuration that would later become the most widely used.
