A wooden canoe was found one day after Hurricane Irma ravaged the east coast of Florida, coming to rest on a shoreline road adjacent to the Indian River Lagoon in Brevard County. Photographer Randy Lathrop was out on a bike ride following the storm and discovered the vessel, notifying the State of Florida Division of Historical Resources. Collaborating with state and local archaeologists, including Thomas Penders, the University of South Florida Libraries employed 3D technology and specialized imaging to document the canoe. The resulting models and CAD drawings will be used for research, conservation, and preservation strategies, as well as condition assessment, and will play a crucial role in interpretation and education efforts.
