The Mourning Slave by Michelangelo at the Louvre. This is one of six figures meant for Pope Julius II's tomb that were ultimately rejected by the artist himself and instead donated to museums around Europe with four located in Florence at the Accademia di Belle Arti and two housed within the Musée du Louvre. In 1863, a plaster cast of this particular work was made from original sculpting completed some 200 years prior. Originally designed as part of a project never brought to completion it now takes its place next to an almost identical Rebellious Slave with plans in the first place calling for both pieces to flank the imposing figure of Moses. Artist: Michelangelo, master Italian artist born between 1475 and his death around 1564. Location: Musée du Louvre in Paris Material Type: White marble as created from Carrara quarries, prized throughout Italy at time for fine sculpting work. Consists of thousands upon thousands vertex points.
