NASA successfully launched twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 from Cape Canaveral in Florida during separate months in the summer of 1977. Initially designed for a close-up examination of Jupiter and Saturn, including Saturn's impressive ring system and the larger moons of both planets, the Voyagers made groundbreaking discoveries such as active volcanoes on Io, one of Jupiter's moons, and intricate details of Saturn's rings. The mission was then extended, with Voyager 2 going on to explore Uranus and Neptune, becoming the only spacecraft to have visited these distant outer planets in our solar system.
