NASA launched twin spacecraft Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 from Cape Canaveral, Florida in separate months during the summer of 1977. Originally designed for closeup studies of Jupiter and Saturn, the Voyagers were set to investigate Saturn's rings and the larger moons of these two planets. Following a string of groundbreaking discoveries on Jupiter's moon Io, including active volcanoes, and intricacies of Saturn's rings, the mission was extended to include exploration of Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2 went on to become the first spacecraft to visit these outer planets, with its pioneering spirit still evident today.
