One of the most innovative aircraft ever designed for the U.S. Navy was the Chance Vought V-173, also known as the Zimmerman "Flying Pancake". This prototype "proof of concept" aircraft defied conventional design by relying on a flat circular body to generate lift instead of traditional wings. The project's sheer scale and expense nearly made it the first V/STOL (vertical takeoff and landing) fighter. In 1939, the V-173 blueprints were presented to the Navy, followed by wind tunnel tests using full-scale models in 1940-41. In January 1942, BuAer requested proposals for two prototype airplanes of an experimental version of the V-173, designated as the XF5U-1. This version featured more powerful engines and carried the military designation XF5U-1. Flight testing of the V-173 continued throughout 1942 and 1943, resulting in reports from Connecticut locals about "flying saucers". Mock-ups of the XF5U-1 were completed in the summer of 1943, but the program progressed slowly due to Vought's focus on other projects like the Corsair and Kingfisher. The arrival of the jet age led to the cancellation of the XF5U-1 contract by the Navy in March 1947, despite the fact that the aircraft was scheduled for its first test flight later that year. The XF5U-1 prototype was scrapped, but the V-173 prototype was preserved and donated to the Smithsonian. The price of this detailed model is $159.00. It was added on August 6, 2015, and last updated on December 20, 2015. The product ID for this item is 55c3592fccff75b0688b4761.
