Aurelius Ambrosius, commonly referred to as Saint Ambrose in English, left an indelible mark on the ecclesiastical landscape of the 4th century as a bishop of Milan. Initially serving as the Roman governor of Liguria and Emilia from his base in Milan, he rose through the ranks to become bishop of Milan by popular acclamation in 374. Ambrose was a vocal critic of Arianism, and allegations have surfaced that he actively promoted persecutions against Arians, Jews, and pagans.
