Cybele, a powerful Anatolian mother goddess, ruled supreme in Phrygia, where she was undoubtedly its only known deity, exercising influence as the state goddess. Phrygian devotees of Cybele eagerly adopted and refined her cult, which Greek colonizers of Asia Minor later enthusiastically absorbed and transported to mainland Greece and its far-flung western colonies around 600 B.C., spreading her worship extensively throughout the region.
