Votive Relief with a Hero at the Banquet
myminifactory
Thebes/Boeotia (Greece) acquired in 1884, a relic of the ancient era is this marble masterpiece crafted between 350-300 BC. A legendary hero is portrayed reclining on a luxurious dining couch (kline), indulging in wine and revelry with his trusty drinking horn (rhyton) by his side. For heroes, eternal life means an endless feast (symposium). Six mortals approach the revered duo from the left, their faces filled with awe and admiration. This image embodies a widespread notion of the time: the afterlife as a heavenly paradise (elysium).
