Votive relief to Achilles and Thetis at the Getty Villa, Los Angeles

The legendary Greek warrior Achilles, recognizable by his imposing shield and helmet, rides alongside his mother Thetis in a chariot on this fragmented relief. The chariot steadily converges with a procession of devotees, who are dressed as travelers, clad in cloaks and wide-brimmed hats. Although only seven of these waiting men remain intact on the broken relief, there were originally about ten. In Greek mythology, many heroes were revered as deities, and some scholars propose that in specific regions, he may have even been worshipped as a god. The group of devotees bring three rams to sacrifice to Achilles in this relief. This votive monument follows the conventional form of an offering set up in a sacred sanctuary. The donors are identified in the partially legible inscription at the bottom of the relief, which lists the names of Lakrates and Gephes and refers to the religious association of the Achilleides, who claim descent from Achilles.
