These ancient terracotta statues were unearthed alongside hundreds of others in a long-abandoned site located southwest of the majestic Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. Excavation revealed them nestled in an untouched deposit, carefully stacked by type. The figures spanned nearly two centuries, dating from around 480 BC to 330 BC; these particular statues hail from the 4th century BC. A stone tablet discovered on site bears testament to a dedication made to Demeter and Persephone, and many of the terracotta figures are of types commonly offered to those revered goddesses.
