These ancient terracotta statues were unearthed with hundreds more in a site located southwest of the magnificent Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. They lay undisturbed, stacked methodically by type in neat layers. The figurines span a period from approximately 480 BC to 330 BC; these specific ones date back to the 4th century BC. A stone inscription unearthed on the site reveals a dedication to Demeter and Persephone, and several of the terracotta figures depict types commonly dedicated to those revered goddesses.
