Francois-Marie Arouet, also known as Voltaire, was a French philosopher born in 1694 who died in Paris in 1778. He had to live in exile in England for three years from 1726 to 1729 where these ideas were more common and influenced his thinking. Voltaire admired the philosophy of John Locke. As a writer, he composed numerous books, poems, and plays that are still enjoyed today. His work often targeted France and the Church, making him initially unpopular but gaining popularity by the time of the French Revolution.
