Launched in October 1997, it was the top-selling car in Europe in 2001 and the second-best selling in 2002. Designed to move the Volkswagen Golf series upscale, the Mk4 features high-quality interiors and advanced equipment levels. It replaced the Mk5 in European markets in 2004 but continued production in South America, Mexico, and China until 2010 for developing countries. The Mk4 was available in Japan but failed to meet Japanese government dimension regulations, imposing a tax on consumers for owning vehicles exceeding maximum width limits.
