Volkswagen Golf Mk2

The updated Volkswagen Golf was a significant improvement over its 1974 predecessor in many aspects, except perhaps for styling. The 1983 GTI 1.8 used a carry-over engine but lacked the zest of the original due to added weight. This was rectified with the introduction of the 16V in 1986, increasing power to 136bhp and reducing 0-60mph time to under 8 seconds. Despite not being the fastest or having the sharpest handling, it was a favorite among hot hatches in the UK. The Mk2 Golf was Volkswagen's second generation of the iconic hatchback, which first debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1983 but arrived in the UK in 1984 and the US in 1985. In 1987, the Golf underwent a significant styling change with the end of front quarter lights windows, new grill, and large bumpers added. There were also minor interior changes, such as larger bolsters on GTI seats and a new wiring loom that relocated the hazard light switch. Production ceased in 1991 with the introduction of the bulkier Mk3 Golf.
