Volkswagen Golf Mk4 is the fourth generation of the compact Volkswagen Golf and successor to the highly successful Golf Mk3 model, launching in October 1997 to instant popularity throughout Europe, eventually becoming the best-selling car on the continent by the year 2001, only being outperformed a year later by the up-and-coming Peugeot 206, claiming the top spot.[4]\n\nGolf MK4 makers sought to move the popular vehicle further upmarket by infusing it with high-end interior finishes and bolstering its already extensive range of onboard amenities, effectively creating an unprecedented luxury experience for its occupants.\n\nThe German-based company phased out the MK4 in 2004 when they released the Golf Mk5 across Europe but continued mass-producing it overseas for several developing nations, particularly South America, Mexico and China, well into the next decade, finishing up domestic sales there as of 2010.[5]\n\nGolf owners living in Japan could still get their hands on the newer design, yet unfortunately were saddled with hefty fines as its width didn't meet stringent national dimension standards, making this iteration not fully compliant for import purposes and affecting subsequent vehicle resale prices, especially annual property tax implications on owners due to vehicle over width.[6]
