Volksswitch - the People's AT Switch (Version 1)
thingiverse
As a student pursuing my master's degree in special education with a certificate in assistive technology, I seized the opportunity to explore the realm of assistive technology – specifically electronic input devices. The first thing that struck me was an overwhelming array of available pressure switches, all offering excessive overlap in functionality and features, yet priced at exorbitant rates. It became increasingly puzzling why manufacturers chose to integrate particular feature sets into their switches, only to provide limited support for customization once incorporated. While working on my master's project, I acquired a 3D printer and immediately recognized the potential it offered for low-cost, one-off manufacturing. The technology is straightforward enough that individuals close to people with disabilities – occupational therapists, physical therapists, assistive technology professionals, and even families – could utilize it effectively. The switch design presented here serves as a proof of concept or existence proof, open to improvement in every element and decision. My intention is to spark conversation, not provide a definitive solution. The Volksswitch aims for cost-effectiveness, functionality, and reliability while striving for high levels of customization and personalization – capabilities now feasible through 3D printing technology. If you believe, as I do, that this vision is achievable, please visit the Volksswitch website (http://www.volksswitch.org) and join our effort. Together, we can empower individuals with disabilities to take control of their lives!
