Volcanic Bomb (Spindle Bomb)

sketchfab

A volcanic bomb explodes into being as molten ejecta, typically exceeding 64mm in diameter, formed during a volcanic eruption. Lava blobs are blasted into the air during an eruption and cool rapidly as they soar through the atmosphere, solidifying before crashing to the ground. Spindle bombs, like this remarkable specimen, develop their distinctive appearance by spinning wildly as they hurtle through the air, with ductile lava stretching back during the bomb's flight, forming a tail that gives it an elongated shape. This particular specimen measures approximately 24cm x 9cm.
