Vladislaus II's coat of arms from the Bakócz Chapel in Esztergom. Vladislas II was born in 1456 and died on March 13, 1516, in Buda, Hungary. He served as king of Bohemia from 1471 and king of Hungary from 1490, achieving a personal union between his two realms. As the eldest son of Casimir IV Jagiełło, king of Poland, Vladislas was elected king of Bohemia in 1471. The early part of his reign was marked by conflict with Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, who gained title to the previously Bohemian crownlands of Moravia, Silesia, and Lusatia through the Treaty of Olomouc in 1478. Following Matthias' death, Vladislas was elected king of Hungary as Ulászló II in 1490. During his reign, the nobility in both Bohemia and Hungary expanded their powers and strengthened their hold over an oppressed peasantry. Vladislas faced rivalry from Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I for the Hungarian crown and was required to concede Habsburg succession to his territories if his own line were to be extinguished, as per the Peace of Pressburg in 1491 and the Treaty of Vienna in 1515. This agreement significantly contributed to the formation of a Habsburg Danubian empire.
