Vittoria Colonna (April 1492 – February 25, 1547), marchioness of Pescara, was a renowned Italian noblewoman and poet. She forged an artistic bond with Michelangelo Buonarroti, exchanging verse with him. The untimely death of her husband in 1525 gave Colonna the freedom to nurture and expand her literary connections, eventually becoming one of Italy's most celebrated poets of the sixteenth century. Famed for her exceptional beauty and platonic passion that had captivated Michelangelo, Vittoria Colonna was a powerful poet who enthralled the world with her XVI-century letters. This stunning sculpture by Maurive David de Gheest, a Paris-based sculptor, carved this masterpiece from marble in 1889 and was presented to the state in 1893.
