Roman Empire Vitellius, Sestertius, Rome, AD 69, AE (g 27 ; mm 34 ; h 6) Obv: Laureate, draped bust r., A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP AVG PM TR P. Rev: Mars, helmeted and naked but for cloak, advances right, holding transverse spear in right hand and trophy in left hand over left shoulder; S-C in field. Bibliografy: RIC 141. BMC 58. This Sestertius, published between April and December of 69 AD (Year of the Four Emperor), commemorates Aulus Vitellius' victory over Otho's army at Bedriacum near Cremona on April 14, 69 AD. Aulus Vitellius issues these coin issues despite his limited military capabilities, as ancient sources attest; they feature Mars Victor, deity of war, on the reverse of the Sestertius, clearly referencing the values and military virtues of the Emperor.
