Vitamin C, E and OPC - OpenSCAD generated from chemical SDF files
thingiverse
Molecule structure STL files are generated by OpenSCAD programs, which are created using the "sdf2scad.perl" Perl script from NCBI's PubChem database. 3D SDF format files serve as a basis for generating these programs. A great note about scripting can be found at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:689652 (Water and Ethanol). I wish you excellent luck with your 3D printer!! Three significant molecules are used in this project: Vitamin C, C6H8O6, also known as L-ascorbic acid, Vitamin E, C29H50O2 or alpha-tocopherol, and one unique molecule called OPC (proanthocyanidin A2), which has the formula of C30H24O12. Construction 3D data is provided by the PubChem Project located at https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/. Here are instructions: please visit http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:689652 for more information on how to assemble these structures (Water and Ethanol). I used the Microsoft Model Repair Service found here: https://modelrepair.azurewebsites.net/ (a user does need an MS account), in order to create a viable STL file from my OpenSCAD program. In terms of build difficulty, I consider the Vitamin E and OPC to be among the largest structures within all my chemical works - some 3D printers might struggle to assemble them correctly. The results of printing were as follows: using the Da Vinci 2.0 printer at an increased scale of x8, pitch of 0.2mm, low print speed with single extruder and white filament proved successful in completing this structure however the 4 hydrogen atoms did drop off when not supported. The reason why these parts fell out, is that a previously created piece called unused caffeine didn't work properly. Therefore, I removed all excess components of it and reworked my original file... using chemically correct techniques.
