A powerful evil demon had become a formidable foe, defying defeat by mortal hands or beastly strength, whether indoors or outdoors, during the day or under the cover of night. To conquer this malevolent spirit, Vishnu transformed into a majestic half-man, half-lion form and concealed himself within the pillar of a doorway, then launched a surprise attack at dusk when the demon's guard was down. As a result of Vishnu's bravery, order and stability were restored. The demon is depicted in two dramatic poses: being disembowelled across Vishnu's knee and trampled under his foot. Along the base of this sculpture, additional details from the story unfold. Just before Vishnu's attack, the demon had become enraged with his own son for showing reverence to Vishnu. Despite his father's warnings, the boy remained steadfast in his devotion, insisting that Vishnu was omnipresent at all times and places. The demon sneered back, "Even here?" and kicked the pillar of a doorway. Vishnu sprang out as the man-lion and overcame him.
