This author discovered a 3D printable mask design on MTBS3D Forums, enabling Android phones as VR HMDs. Despite liking the concept, they weren't entirely satisfied and opted to create their own version using Google Sketchup. The design is compatible with any 3D printer, and users can utilize native Android demos from OpenDive or Vireio Perception drivers in conjunction with FreePIE and Splashtop for 3D streaming with head tracking. The mask was specifically designed to fit a Samsung Galaxy S4 but should work for similar-sized phones. Assembling the mask involves printing out key components, including the lens holder, two head clips, and the main body. Lenses from toy binoculars or telescope eyepieces are recommended; users may need to sand the holes slightly for a tight fit. The provided Google Sketchup files allow modification of the hole size and interpupillary distance (IPD) for improved 3D viewing. After assembly, two elastic bands secure the phone, while M3x20mm nuts and bolts hold the lens holder in place after adjusting focus. An elastic fabric band serves as a head strap, and padding from draft excluders ensures comfort and protection.
