Adeline Virginia Stephen, later known as Virginia Woolf, was born on January 25, 1882 and died on March 28, 1941 at the age of 59. As a renowned English writer, she dominated modernist literature in the twentieth century. During the interwar period, Woolf emerged as a prominent figure in London's literary scene and played a pivotal role in shaping the influential Bloomsbury Group. Her notable works include Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, Orlando, and A Room of One's Own, which emphasized that a woman must have financial independence and her own space to write fiction. Woolf struggled with severe mental illness throughout her life, now believed to be bipolar disorder. In 1941, she took her own life by drowning. A bronze bust of Virginia Woolf, created from a 1931 sculpture by Stephen Tomlin, was unveiled in 2004 at the southwest corner of Tavistock Square. Between 1924 and 1939, Woolf resided at number 52 Tavistock Square with her husband Leonard Woolf. Together, they operated The Hogarth Press, a prominent publisher that championed modernist fiction and poetry, releasing works by notable authors such as T.S. Eliot, E.M. Forster, and Katherine Mansfield. They also translated Sigmund Freud's writings into English. Tragically, their home was destroyed during the London blitz in October 1941. The south side of the square where Woolf lived is now occupied by a hotel.
