This is a damaged fragment showing Virgin and Child from the front wall of a sarcophagus. A Madonna image depicts Mary alone or with her child Jesus. Both Catholic and Orthodox churches hold these images as central icons. The word 'Madonna' comes from Italian, meaning 'my lady'. Christian iconography features many traditional subtypes of the Madonna and Child type, often found in Eastern Orthodox art, identified by notable locations such as the Vladimir icon, Agiosoritissa, Blachernitissa, or descriptive postures like Hodegetria, Eleusa.
