Virgin and Child
myminifactory
This large-sized masterpiece is composed of a Della Robbia frame set around a stunning marble medallion featuring the Virgin and Child, accompanied by two young children. The frame boasts a double border, crafted from a garland of vibrant fruits and flowers and a series of white cherubs set against a brilliant blue background. Such an intricate design was characteristic of the first quarter of the sixteenth century, when Andrea Della Robbia (1435-1525) and his talented sons were actively creating at their workshop. The marble medallion is skillfully sculpted in fine low relief, with the figures depicted in a masterful foreshortened perspective, showcasing the sculptor's desire to emulate the pictorial relief work of Donatello (1386-1466) and demonstrating his impressive knowledge of Michelangelo's (1475-1564) renowned works. This has led art historians to attribute the piece to Andrea Sansovino (1467-1529), a renowned artist of the time.
