This place was once home to a statue of the Virgin of Monserrat, as its former owner, Reverend Duarte Quirós, had dedicated the house to the annual vacations of students from Monserrat Convictory College. On March 15th, 1878, the first contingent of Italian immigrants arrived in Caroya, mainly from Friuli, drawn by the state's agricultural policies offering land for cultivation. Between December 1886 and January 1887, dozens of colonists on Caroya estate fell victim to a cholera epidemic. Faced with fear over the disease's spread, a Friulian priest, Father José Bonoris, called for a day of prayers and recitations.
