Viper 8 Jet Engine Front gearboxThis unit is fitted inside the front casing and is driven driven by the compressor and provides power to the accessories and also takes drive from the air starter gearing it down.The pipe is part of the air breather system. This unit is fully enclosed and receives its oil from oil lines not shown.The large diameter fan is powered by a much smaller diameter turbine at the exhaust end. The turbine is spun at a very high rpm due to the very high speed of the exhaust but rpm’s are restricted to far lower rpm by the physics of the fan. The turbine loses a lot of efficiency and power if the rpm’s are kept low.The result is a much larger turbine driving a smaller fan. As well, the rest of the engine is compromised due to the reduced airflow through the engine.Putting a reduction gear between the two allows for a far more efficient power transfer from turbine to fan.Thank you Dave.
