Vintage well water pump
thingiverse
This printable model showcases a vintage deep well water pump, inspired by the Meyers pump but with significant modifications made for ease of design and personal preference. When printed, it can be assembled using non-printed parts to create a semi-functional pump that demonstrates the reciprocating motion of the connecting rod, even though it cannot actually pump water without a cylinder. Each individual piece of the pump is represented by a separate thing file, but note that the labeled "Pump" should be referred to as "Pump2.0," which includes both "Pump2.0 Top" and "Pump2.0 Bottom." The photos provided offer clear guidance on assembly. Initially designed in inches at near full scale, the model was exported with metric measurements, resulting in a pump that would be too large for most consumer printers when imported into a slicer. To address this, it's recommended to print the design at a reduced scale, such as 25%, which will also allow the use of readily available materials like old metal coat hangers or wire for the connecting rod and pins. Two versions of the pump are included: one that was originally exported in one piece, and another split into two halves using Meshmixer. Printing the pump in two halves with supports enabled allows for easy removal of internal supports, although this means connecting the two halves will be necessary. A thin bead of hot glue can be used to connect the two halves, or you could print the pump as a solid piece and drill a hole down its center if you prefer a hollow design. Both versions are designed with a hollow structure, so using Meshmixer is required to make it solid. To ensure successful printing, consider orienting parts like the handle hinge with their long flat surface facing downwards towards the bed, reducing the need for excessive support material. Experiment with different speeds, infill, and orientations to achieve optimal results. Finally, a miniature pipe can be created by drilling out 7/16" steel round stock to 5/16" and hot gluing it in place. A piece of tubing would be more suitable, avoiding the need for drilling, which may be challenging without a lathe or drill press. In future updates, I plan to model the two-piece base that surrounds the pipe where it enters the ground and make the files available here to complete this design.
