I've been wanting to upgrade my 1960s mechanical NuTone doorbell chime for a while, and I finally found a way to give it a fresh new look without sacrificing its iconic mechanical sound. I was particularly drawn to bmemike's cover design, but I had to make some adjustments to get it to work with my specific chime model - the mechanical chimes on mine emerge from the bottom, after all. To start, I printed out the frame using wood filament and the grate using white PLA. Next, I carefully cut a thin piece of black fabric and glued it behind the grate to conceal any unsightly wires that might otherwise be visible. This was a crucial step in giving my chime a more polished appearance. Finally, I gave the mechanical chimes themselves a makeover by applying Rub 'n Buff to give them a beautiful pewter finish - they were originally brass, which didn't quite match the aesthetic I was going for.
